grean or black, Mercedes Fashion Week

The prestigious Mercedes fashion week 2009 leading to the trends of 2010, few weeks away revealed some chic daily wear styles. Yep, it was not all glamour and bizarre that dominated the style trends. While LA went completely green and eco-friendly, New York saw black as a dominant shade. Charlotte Ronson bought a Gothic touch (coinciding with Halloween, perhaps). She turned away from her signature feminine soft line to present a darker shade.
If DKNY celebrated 20 years in the New York Mercedes Fashion Week, then Eco-Ganik sprung a simpler collection in LA. Most designs were extremely wearable. Is this a sign of times for fashion? To be grounded closer to reality? It is not the A-list celebs that are making news, but the clothes that the fit models are wearing. And green is the favourite color.
Eco-Ganik’s designer Hoda Mallone leads the 2009 collection with eco-friendly natural fabrics. This label already has a huge A-list clients like Superwoman Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Halle Berry and Cameron Diaz. So environment is in focus and runways are picking up trends to go green. If Eco-Ganik is creating an eco-friendly line free of chemicals in their apparel, they are nurturing the green revolution. The clothes displayed by this five year old company, relies heavily on regular skirts, wearable tunics and tops-totally chic and feminine. Chose any one of these affordable dresses for dinner or lunch dates with pals. Or even a day at the office, they are subtle.

Fashion Week Mercedes Benz for a good cause

From New York to Miami and Berlin the fashion week Mercedes Benz met with a standing ovation with the eclectic fare dished out by designers. The spring collection held in September revealed fashion is not only about self obsession but also about reaching out to those who lead unglamorous lives- Thus putting some meaning in fashion shows that are seen as extravagant glamour shows -superficial in nature and content. The fashion week Mercedes Benz was a marked departure from the chic to charitable. With recession still looming large, charity on the catwalk is welcome. Breast cancer was in focus. Designers worked for charity ensured there was some thought in the creativity to this sensitive issue for the fashion conscious women. This initiative by Council of Fashion Designers of America introduced QVC Charms for Charity. They completed 15 years and needed to make their presence felt in the competitive fashion world. Fashion week Mercedes Benz was exactly the platform for the same.
Which fashion designer will refuse an offer to facilitate awareness of breast cancer? So there were designers like Robert Lee Morris, Bradley Bayou, George Simonton, Anthony Nak and Mak Bouwer. The collection marked the awareness for the health of women prone to breast cancer. If fashion week Mercedes Benz was an ideal platform for women to know the latest trends on clothes, it was also informing them about the latest medical information on breasts. The entire collection raised nearly USD 50 million to contribute to breast cancer charities worldwide.

Lakme Fashion Week – What makes Mens fashion so appealing now?

Lakme Fashion Week
What’s fashion without its trends being showcased months before they actually hit the consumer markets? At the close of this year’s fashion fest in New Delhi and Mumbai, the organisers received an overwhelming response from aspiring designers from all over the country. The fact that the decade old organisation is now dedicating a section to Mens’ wear shows how the metrosexual male has changed the fashion equations for his counterparts. Ethnic wear and causal wear having made their debut; men will now have a lot to choose from. Designers are now focusing on dressing the men.
What makes Mens fashion so appealing now?
Men always had the money but never knew where to spend it apart from stocks, dating women, drinking and sports. Now they can spend more on clothes and not get bored wearing the same trousers and shirts. The weekend collections have met with a huge response from men who are no longer shy to show off their fashionable side. The trend of pushing forward the Mens wear in Lakme Fashion Week 2009 reveals more men are now willing to buy designer stuff. Van Heusen made this attempt and now the Independent show at the fashion week is listed as the world’s fourth most popular catwalks. Three days of mens clothing and accessories were featured by designers.
How have men made fashion weeks popular?
They are buying branded wear regularly and find them affordable. Hence professional designers feel they can cater to Indian men and their fashionable tastes.

Audi Joburg Fashion Week and Sanlam Joburg Fashion Week in South Af africarica

audi joburg fashion week and sanlam joburg fashion week in south africaSouth Africa’s fashion designers, fashion editors, fashion enthusiasts and of course the socialites had quite busy last two weeks. A week earlier they were busy in the Audi Joburg Fashion Week, now they are enjoying the Sanlam Joburg Fashion Week.

They say that South Africa has two fashion weeks now because of the political instability in the country. As the ruling Party was divided in two parts the fashion week was also divided in two. We do not have any ideas about the politics in the country, but we do know that the new Audi Joburg Fashion Week is better than the old one. Some top designers of the country have left the Sanlam Fashion Week and joined the Audi Joburg Fashion Week. It has everything better than the Sanlam fashion week, right from presentation, arrangements and style. Designers like Ephraim Molingoane, Marianne Fassler, Audrey Mokhari, Mosawamusa, FransKies, Abigail Keats and Thembisile Mazibuko participated in the Audi Joburg Fashion Week. However, the best designer in the fashion week was Sindi, whose designs won most accolades in the event. The most disappointed show was presented by Craig Jacob’s, who sent out models in the ramp in unfinished clothes. On the other hand in the Sanlam Fashion week the new and upcoming designers of South Africa, along with some old established one, are showing their collection at Museum Africa in Newtown Jozi.  The fashion week is still on, so will update you about it later.

Wardrobe malfunction rocks Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week once again, once as Indian designers fail to keep their designs intact

Warrobe malfunction rocks wills lifestyle india fashion weekIt seems that Indian designers and the organisers of the Wills Lifestyle Indian Fashion Week do not believe in learning lessons from the past.  Once again they failed to discipline the models and fashion designers participating at the India Fashion Week. It all happened at designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s show.  Audiences were left astounded when left shoulder of Belgian model Debbie’s dark blue dress slipped off. Although Debbie finished the walk confidently pulling up her sleeve with in seconds, but there was enough time for cameramen and photographers to grab the moment in camera.

Designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, who has showed the same collection in Paris recently, and won accolades for it, was not even present at the fashion week to show his collection in his own country. His show was managed by his relative, who forgot to keep in mind the minute details in the show. Rajesh Pratap Singh himself is in Paris at present, designing for Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s opera. Designers, who were present there, said that these things happen in international show as well and therefore it should not be given so much hype. Another blunder occurred in designer Varun Bahl’s show, when model Shamita’s shoe slipped, while walking on the ramp.  The same blunder occurred in India’s Lakme Fashion Week in 2006, when Model Carol gracious dress slipped of her shoulder at Gauhar Khan’s show.

Indian designers go global at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

indian designers go global at wills lifestyle india fashion weekAs more and more Indian designers are being invited to show their collection at the fashion weeks abroad, the designs of the Indian designers are going global. At Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week designer Prashant Verma presented a collection which was inspired by the life and death of 50’s famous Hollywood actor James Dean, who died in a car accident at the age of 24. The collection was obviously targeted more at the international audiences than the Indian, as only a handful of Indians know James Dean. The collection comprises of biker jackets, hand painted artwork, handbags made of shattered car lights and even dresses made of bandages, cruel some will say. Some of his dresses were also inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Harris and Natalie Wood, the actresses who worked with James Dean.

One of the top Indian fashion designers Rohit Bal presented a very fabulous and international collection, which was a mix of Indian tradition and western silhouettes. “Ashta Dhatu” (mixture of eight metals).  Most of women attires were carved out of boning (wires used to give shape to designs). Bal used fabric like chiffon, brocade, lame and jersey. For his men collection he presented trousers, shirts, long jackets, sherwanis and armour jackets. On the other hand Designer Tarun Tahiliani presented a very Indian collection with saris, gowns in very Indian shades of red, black and gold. However, Tarun said that he likes traditional Indian wear to be wearable individually and not in sets, as most of the traditional Indian attires do come in sets of two or three.

Film Stars and cricketers to walk the ramp at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

film stars and cricketers to walk the ramp at wills lifestyle india fashion weekThe trend started few years back when designers started inviting stars from Indian film industry to walk the ramp for them in their creations. Now it has become a competition, every year some designers invite their friends from Bollywood to walk the ramp for them. This year the designer duo Gauri and Nainika Karan invited Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu to walk the ramp for them, on the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.  The result, all the newspaper carried the pictures and articles of Bipasha in India Fashion Week, instead of talking about designs, designers and Fashion Week itself. Rumors are Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to walk the ramp for one designer as well.

But many designers feel that the cause of fashion week lags behind due to all these stars. Not only media fails to cover actual fashion because of these celebrities, but also the buyers do not get an opportunity of concentrating on the designs. In fact, some designers in the Indian fashion industry are strictly against this trend, they feel that designers who can not present good designs try to divert the attention of the audiences from actual designs to the celebrities. This small group of designer says they will never invite celebrities to walk on the ramp for them, as their designs are good enough. Indian models also do not like the appearance of the celebrities on the ramp; they think the stars steal all the attention.
