Audi Joburg Fashion Week and Sanlam Joburg Fashion Week in South Af africarica

audi joburg fashion week and sanlam joburg fashion week in south africaSouth Africa’s fashion designers, fashion editors, fashion enthusiasts and of course the socialites had quite busy last two weeks. A week earlier they were busy in the Audi Joburg Fashion Week, now they are enjoying the Sanlam Joburg Fashion Week.

They say that South Africa has two fashion weeks now because of the political instability in the country. As the ruling Party was divided in two parts the fashion week was also divided in two. We do not have any ideas about the politics in the country, but we do know that the new Audi Joburg Fashion Week is better than the old one. Some top designers of the country have left the Sanlam Fashion Week and joined the Audi Joburg Fashion Week. It has everything better than the Sanlam fashion week, right from presentation, arrangements and style. Designers like Ephraim Molingoane, Marianne Fassler, Audrey Mokhari, Mosawamusa, FransKies, Abigail Keats and Thembisile Mazibuko participated in the Audi Joburg Fashion Week. However, the best designer in the fashion week was Sindi, whose designs won most accolades in the event. The most disappointed show was presented by Craig Jacob’s, who sent out models in the ramp in unfinished clothes. On the other hand in the Sanlam Fashion week the new and upcoming designers of South Africa, along with some old established one, are showing their collection at Museum Africa in Newtown Jozi.  The fashion week is still on, so will update you about it later.

Wardrobe malfunction rocks Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week once again, once as Indian designers fail to keep their designs intact

Warrobe malfunction rocks wills lifestyle india fashion weekIt seems that Indian designers and the organisers of the Wills Lifestyle Indian Fashion Week do not believe in learning lessons from the past.  Once again they failed to discipline the models and fashion designers participating at the India Fashion Week. It all happened at designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s show.  Audiences were left astounded when left shoulder of Belgian model Debbie’s dark blue dress slipped off. Although Debbie finished the walk confidently pulling up her sleeve with in seconds, but there was enough time for cameramen and photographers to grab the moment in camera.

Designer Rajesh Pratap Singh, who has showed the same collection in Paris recently, and won accolades for it, was not even present at the fashion week to show his collection in his own country. His show was managed by his relative, who forgot to keep in mind the minute details in the show. Rajesh Pratap Singh himself is in Paris at present, designing for Bollywood director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s opera. Designers, who were present there, said that these things happen in international show as well and therefore it should not be given so much hype. Another blunder occurred in designer Varun Bahl’s show, when model Shamita’s shoe slipped, while walking on the ramp.  The same blunder occurred in India’s Lakme Fashion Week in 2006, when Model Carol gracious dress slipped of her shoulder at Gauhar Khan’s show.

Indian designers go global at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

indian designers go global at wills lifestyle india fashion weekAs more and more Indian designers are being invited to show their collection at the fashion weeks abroad, the designs of the Indian designers are going global. At Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week designer Prashant Verma presented a collection which was inspired by the life and death of 50’s famous Hollywood actor James Dean, who died in a car accident at the age of 24. The collection was obviously targeted more at the international audiences than the Indian, as only a handful of Indians know James Dean. The collection comprises of biker jackets, hand painted artwork, handbags made of shattered car lights and even dresses made of bandages, cruel some will say. Some of his dresses were also inspired by Elizabeth Taylor, Julie Harris and Natalie Wood, the actresses who worked with James Dean.

One of the top Indian fashion designers Rohit Bal presented a very fabulous and international collection, which was a mix of Indian tradition and western silhouettes. “Ashta Dhatu” (mixture of eight metals).  Most of women attires were carved out of boning (wires used to give shape to designs). Bal used fabric like chiffon, brocade, lame and jersey. For his men collection he presented trousers, shirts, long jackets, sherwanis and armour jackets. On the other hand Designer Tarun Tahiliani presented a very Indian collection with saris, gowns in very Indian shades of red, black and gold. However, Tarun said that he likes traditional Indian wear to be wearable individually and not in sets, as most of the traditional Indian attires do come in sets of two or three.

Film Stars and cricketers to walk the ramp at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

film stars and cricketers to walk the ramp at wills lifestyle india fashion weekThe trend started few years back when designers started inviting stars from Indian film industry to walk the ramp for them in their creations. Now it has become a competition, every year some designers invite their friends from Bollywood to walk the ramp for them. This year the designer duo Gauri and Nainika Karan invited Bollywood actor Bipasha Basu to walk the ramp for them, on the first day of the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week.  The result, all the newspaper carried the pictures and articles of Bipasha in India Fashion Week, instead of talking about designs, designers and Fashion Week itself. Rumors are Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni is all set to walk the ramp for one designer as well.

But many designers feel that the cause of fashion week lags behind due to all these stars. Not only media fails to cover actual fashion because of these celebrities, but also the buyers do not get an opportunity of concentrating on the designs. In fact, some designers in the Indian fashion industry are strictly against this trend, they feel that designers who can not present good designs try to divert the attention of the audiences from actual designs to the celebrities. This small group of designer says they will never invite celebrities to walk on the ramp for them, as their designs are good enough. Indian models also do not like the appearance of the celebrities on the ramp; they think the stars steal all the attention.

Tokyo Fashion Week

Tokyo fashion weekThe sixth Japanese Fashion week commenced from Monday in Tokyo. 45 labels including 10 newcomers  will show their 2008-’09 Autumn/Winter Collection in Tokyo this year. The Japanese fashion week began on Monday with Environmental issues as the theme. One of the top designers of Japan Hiromi Yoshida, one of the seven designers who got the opportunity to show their designs on the first day, presented her collection with forest as the theme.  Another new label “zechia,” by NAKA (Masahiro Nakagawa) and LICA presented ethnic designs inspired by 50’s and 60’s. Two other labels debuted on Monday in Tokyo Fashion week, first Self-styled “otaku” brand “motonari ono” by designer Motonari Ono and the second Hidenobu Yasui named after the designer himself. Where Motonari Ono’s designs were inspired by video games Hidenobu Yasui’s concentrated on long dresses in navy and off white shades. Famous Japanese label “mintdesigns,” by Hokuto Katsui and Nao Yagi also presented its designs on Monday.

Traditional Japanese outfit Kimono grabbed all the attention of the audiences on the second day of the Japanese Fashion Week. Jotaro Saito, a third generation Kimono Designer, presented Kimonos in prints and bright shades.  Japanese generally wear Kimonos on weddings and funerals these days, therefore the designer tried to seduced  Japanese youth to wear traditional Kimonos  in new style. However, the designer failed to make his models, who are used to sashaying on the ramp in trousers and skirts, feel comfortable in Kimonos. Anyways the designer’s effort was appreciated by the audiences.

Alber Elbaz’s fabulous collection for Lanvin

Alber Elbaz’s fabulous collection for lanvinThe first opinion of everyone after seeing Alber Elbaz’s show was, it is pretty wearable. The clothes are not only made for the ramp or the Oscars. Most of the dresses and jewellery in the collection can be worn to office and parties by the women who are not Hollywood actresses or the daughters of billionaires. Nor Alber Elbaz’s collection was inspired by the past nor it was futuristic, it was simple fashion for the pure present. That’s what makes it quite wearable we guess.

Alber Elbaz’s collection was also celebrating femininity, like most of the designers at the Paris Fashion Week. Dresses made of ribbons were looking like some one has very cautiously cut the dresses horizontally and vertically. Alber Elbaz gave his dresses long and lean silhouette with the dresses made of ribbons. One shoulder dresses, tops and slender pants won lot of applauds by the audiences.  Emphasis was given to the waistline and in some dresses, to the hips as well. A top that was shaped like gift rap bow was specially liked by the audiences. Alber Elbaz gave as much thought to the jewellery as to the clothes. Like the clothes the jewellery was also quite wearable. The rectangular and shiny jewellery matched perfectly with the dresses. Black gloves and handbags complemented all the dresses perfectly, by giving them a very formal look. At last some very nice mid-calf stiletto boot or a stiletto pump with a gold heel made the entire collection simply outstanding.

Marc Jacobs for Louis Vuitton at the Paris Fashion Week

Marc Jacobs for louis vuitton at the paris fashion weekMarc Jacobs managed to surprise everyone in every way, while presenting his collection for the Louis Vuitton at the Paris Fashion. First surprise was that the show started at time, we all know that Marc has angered lot journalists and buyers few months ago by starting his show two hours late and not apologising for the delay on top of that. In fact Marc was seen helping everyone find their seats so that the show can start on time.

Second surprise was Marc has lost lot of weight he was looking a lot thinner, so we guess that rehab has helped him a lot. He was looking much calm and happy as well. The third surprise was the collection itself, it was simply outstanding. Unlike Marc’s last show for Louis Vuitton in Paris, the collection was pretty luxurious and wearable. Last time Marc astonished everyone by presenting models in transparent nurse’s uniform, the models were looking like a character from some porn cum horror movie. But this time Marc has presented simply fabulous and futuristic collection. Marc presented lot of coats in black, cream, chocolate, camel and pale mint. He also wonderfully paired polo neck sweater with the fur jackets, broad belts and leather pants. Marc took inspiration from past for his accessories, as his belts were more like the metal cages which women used to wear under their dresses to keep their figures. His necklaces, cuffs and handbags were also unique and impressive.
