Valentino’s successor surprised all

valentino successor surprised allIt is not easy to fill shoes of great Valentino Garavani at Valentino, but Alessandra Facchinetti faced no difficulty in doing so. Facchinetti proved the critics wrong, and presented a wonderful collection which has an essence of Valentino. But Facchinetti went a step further and made her collection much more youthful than that of Valentino. Valentino’s clientele were mainly middle aged or old ladies, but Facchinetti’s collection was much younger and futuristic.

Facchinetti was appointed as the successor of Valentino for the same purpose, of giving the label a youthful look without damaging the essence of Valentino. Very few people have expected this wonderful performance by Facchinetti, as she had a bad experience with Gucci in 2004. She was asked to leave Gucci only 10 days after showing her second collection, over a disagreement with the management.  The 35-year-old designer then spent eight months thinking of her next move, before joining the French outerwear brand Moncler. Instead of borrowing ideas from Valentino, Facchinetti presented new ideas for skirts and cape coat. Instead of bright shades she used very gentle colours, like pale bule, gray and rain washed sky. Facchinetti collection was lauded by the young Hollywood actresses, who were sitting in the front row. Unlike earlier, now they have lot to choose from Valentino. But Facchinetti said she is not trying to replace Valentino, as no one can do so. She said she is trying to keep the masters essence alive in her collection. Well so far so good Facchinetti.

Balenciaga in Paris Fashion Week

Balenciaga in paris fashion weekAs the fashion critics are busy finding faults in the designs of the labels showing in the Paris Fashion Week, there is one designer who has managed to satisfy them all, Nicolas Ghesquière at Balenciaga. Where most of the designers are looking back at the 50’s and 60’s for inspiration, Nicolas Ghesquièr has designed the clothes that define the future. His designs were ultra modern and innovative, above all they brought a breath of fresh air in the otherwise monotonous Paris Fashion Week.
Nicolas Ghesquière used lot of black in his designs. He presented black dresses with half sleeves, black stretch skirts, black skirts with squared off panels, and black leather dresses and skirts. He also used latex shiny paint and tapes. The latex tapes were tied around shoes and boots to give that ultra modern look. Hand painted Samurai Armour was also loved by 400 selected audiences at the fashion show. The crystal ball jewellery was also very attractive and sure to become a success. A set of crystal jewellery, on both hands and neck, was definitely attracting the attention of every single person sitting there. Hairs of most of the models were tied in a severe bun, leaving the audiences to focus on necklaces easily. Nicolas Ghesquière also presented MX-style trousers with speed stripes and low slung.  For finale Nicolas Ghesquière presented latex jackets, coats and dresses. Jackets hand painted with dragons, birds, land gnarled trunks were extremely attractive and futuristic. Nicolas Ghesquière has surely revived Balenciaga

Vivienne Westwood introduce seven-year-olds in fashion world

vivienne westwood introduce seven year olds in fashion weekEveryone just loved the prints on Vivienne Westwood collection showed in Paris Fashion week. But the fact is, that it was not print, but the paintings made by seven-year-old school children. The dame requested over 40 children, from year three of the Portland school in Nottingham, to paint the pictures of bugs, plants and snakes on her entire new collection and the result was this fabulous collection.

Out of the 41 school children, two were invited in the show with their teacher. Phoebe Ackroyd and Euan Bonser were sitting on the front row, with their teacher Madeleine Bell, at the sides of celebrities like Kanye West. The 25-year-old school teacher said that, Vivienne Westwood came to know about the children after she told her students to write letters to her, while teaching them about fashion.  Bell herself has studied fashion, and is a big fan of Vivienne Westwood. However, the children, who played an important role in making Vivienne Westood’s fabulous collection, were themselves dressed in school’s green sweatshirt and grey trousers. Little Phoebe was so impressed with beautiful clothes and models, that she has decided to become a model when she grows up. The Fashion show was based on the fantasy of people living in a jungle on the natural resources. Vivienne Westwood is known for her innovative ideas in the fashion world. In London Fashion Week she made her models walk the ramp carry placards protesting for the rights of the prisoners at the Guantanamo bay.

Milan Fashion Week

Milan fashion weekIt seems, most of the designers are looking at the past for new ideas. After London Fashion Week, where designers presented designs inspired by the 60’s and 70’s, the designers showing at the Milan Fashion week are doing the same.  Robert Cavalli, the designer famous for his flamboyant designs, took inspiration from the 50’s for his collection, showed at the Milan Fashion Week. Cavalli’s designs were inspired by Nathalie Wood’s style in her blockbuster movie “West Side Story”.  Cavalli opened his show with white dresses with roses printed on them, prom frocks with matching gloves and shoes, mimosa and Wisteria. But Cavelli’s show was not totally devoted to 50’s, as he also presented some designs inspired by the Incas. He presented some traditional tan knits, embroidered vests in white, grey and black colour and peasants skirts. Cavalli ended the show with prom dresses in black. Cavalli’s collection, which was lauded by the audiences, was quite different from the sexy clothes which he used to present earlier.

Another designer, whose collection was appreciated by the audiences, was Antonio Marras. He started showing his autumn winter collection with bride and bride groom’s attires. For men, he presented the simple suiting and pin stream coats. For women, he presented full skirts, tops, dresses with metallic sequin details and silver jewellery. Some of the designs in Marras’s show were also inspired by the 40’s and 50’s. He ended his show with the scene inspired from Chagall’s famous 1950 painting “The Mariée”.

Vivienne Westwood in London Fashion Week

vivienne westwood in london fashion weekVivienne Westwood’s comeback show in London Fashion Week was a breath of fresh air among the monotonous shows. The Queen of punk, not only brought life back to the ramp in the London Fashion Week, but also gave a message with her show. The show started with a female model carrying a placard protesting for the right of the prisoners at the Guantanamo bay, and a male model wearing underpants of orange colour, the colour of the clothes of prisoners at Guantanamo bay.

The veteran designer, who was making a comeback in the London Fashion Week after ten years gap following popular demand, presented her Red Label collection inspired by 1970’s. It comprises of Westwood’s favourite kilts and bodices draped corsetry. Jaime, daughter of actor Ray Winston and socialite Alice Dellal walked the ramp for Vivienne Westwood. Dellal even shaved her half head, to pay tribute to the queen of Punk. Westwood herself was wearing a blouse covered with protest badges and black trousers. Celebrities like Jodie and Jemma Kidd, Kelly Osbourne, Kimberley Stewart, Lily Allen and Jefferson Hack attended the Red Label show by Vivienne Westwood. Apart from the Guantanamo bay controversy, Westwood’s show was fabulous, and different from other designers as expected. The London Fashion Week was officially launched by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s wife Sarah Brown, on Sunday. House of Holland, Paul Smith  and Gareth Pugh were some other labels who presented their collection during the London Fashion Week. The show concluded on Friday.

New York Fashion Week ends in style

new york fashion week ends in styleMarc Jacobs ended the very impressive Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week, with a not so impressive show on February 8th. In an attempt of being “different”, Marc did not use feathers or tweed in his collection, which was used by almost all the designers showing at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.  It seems that Marc worked more on the stage then on the designs.
But let’s talk about other designers, who were really impressive at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week.  Zac Posen had a good show this time, as some of his dresses were really gorgeous. Embroidered coat, beaded tuxedo and school boy and school girl suits were liked by the audiences. Zac Posen also presented some pretty gowns, but the feathered caps were more notable.  Sean John’s label Combs’, made a comeback in to the New York Fashion Week with a runway show. Sean John’s Combs’ celebrated its tenth anniversary with the show. His collection comprises of sweaters with sequins, suits and jackets with exposed zipper details. He also used purple in some of his designs, but not feathers. Cynthia Rowley’s collection was inspired by Victorian times, as it comprises of loose and flowing dresses.  Some of the dresses were quite wearable. Ralph Lauren’s collection was also very exciting with high neck cocktail dresses and cowl neck gowns. He used combinations like red-black, green-black and purple-black, which are all time hits. Tommy Hilfiger presented some wearable sexy jersey tops and wool trousers.

Feathers made a comeback at the Mercedes- Benz New York Fashion week

mercedes bens new york fashion weekYou will see lot of Hollywood actress wearing gowns decorated with feathers at the award functions, courtesy New York Fashion Week. Most of the fashion designers, at the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion week, chose to use feathers in their designs this time. Feathers were used in all kind of attires by the designers, be it dresses, coats or hats. No, they are not in shoes, not yet. Beautiful gowns decorated with goldfinch, cardinal and peacock colour were appreciated by the audiences as well.
Feather was used as hair accessories in Marc by Marc Jacobs. Marc, which is more popular and less expensive collection of Marc Jacobs, comprises of mini shift dresses with zippers details, school girl skirts, leather dresses and satin pants. The collection was very much wearable and is expected to be a big hit. Badgely Mischka presented gorgeous gowns decorated with hand painted petals. They are sure to become a hit with socialites and Hollywood actress. The duo also presented their day time collection, which seems inspired by the 70s a little. Monique Lhuillier’s collection, which was inspired by the 1920s, also has some fur trim attires. Celebrities will sure love to flaunt these one shoulder and strapless dresses, decorated by feathers and mirror beads. Cynthia Steffe and Diesel also presented their collection during the Mercedes Benz New York Fashion week. The Mercedes Benz New York Fashion week will end with Marc Jacob’s show on February 8th.

Max Azria in New York Fashion Week

Max Azria in new york fashion weekOne of the top fashion designers in the industry, Max Azria, presented two shows in the New York Fashion Week, first for his newly acquired label Herve Leger and second for his own label BCBG. As Azria promised earlier, he kept the essence of Herve Leger designs alive by using bandage designs, which were very prominent in Herve Leger’s designs earlier. However, Azria used new fabrics in the bandage designs this time. He even used the pattern with the coats, jackets and pants this time for Herve Leger. A skin tight bandage dress with silhouette was fabulous. Another navy dress with subtle bands of black beading, shawl collar and flower appliqué was lauded most by the audiences. Herve Leger was launched in 1985 and Azria bought it ten years ago. In totality Herve Leger collection, which included everything from gowns, minis, trousers and day dresses, was definitely a hit.
But where some designers find it difficult to put a single decent show and instead throw tantrums, Azria presented another hit show for his own label “BCBG”. To begin with, Azria presented some beautiful muted dresses in shades of cream and gray. He used fabrics such as organza, wool, and flowing silks in contrast to give that exceptional and superb look. He even used bamboo in some of his dresses. All the models were sporting leather and wool layered belt, which is sure to become a rage soon. Azria flawlessly managed to keep his two shows completely different. Some designers need to learn lessons from him.

Kira Plastinina – one of the top Fashion designers in Russia

Kira Plastinina, 15, is one of the top fashion designers in RussiaKira Plastinina, 15, is one of the top fashion designers in Russia. She launched her chain of stores in Russia three years ago, that means that she is designing the clothes since the age of 13. She is the daughter of Russian millionaire Sergei Plastinin, who was the co-founder of Wimm-Bill-Dann, Russia’s largest dairy and juice producer.

Some say that Kira has only managed to become what she is today, because of her millionaire father. But the fact remains that her brand has more than 40 stores in Russia, which shows her popularity in the country. Father Palstinin has quit his job at Wimm-Bill-Dann and now runs other businesses including the cOmmercial side of Kira’s stores. Kira has been appointed as the chief designer in her father’s stores. Kira’s is all to set to launch her clothes in US, as her father will soon open 10 store in the country, 5 in New York and 5 in Los Angeles, in 2008 with 40 other in pipeline. Kira even has backing of Paris Hilton, who was seen sitting on the front row during Kira’s show in Moscow. Although rumors are that Kira has paid Hilton $ 2 million for this. However, Hilton also visited Kira’s showroom where she had a look at Kira’s other designs. Kira said her clothes target women aged between 14- 25 years old. Kira herself attends school daily and goes to her stores directly from school for work. After finishing her school, she is planning to join the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, a London institution that has produced such fashion gurus as John Galliano and Hedi Slimane.
